Hello Beautiful people! After the popularity of my last post - The 10 Acne Commandments , Today I'm going to share my views on hair care. If followed these religiously, your hair will stay lustrous and healthy for a long time and truly be your crowning glory.
1. Treat Dandruff if you have it ASAP. This is the No. 1 cause of hair fall which goes unnoticed. Dandruff is caused by a fungus in your scalp. It will not go away on its own. There is nothing as a little dandruff. If you have. Get rid of it. Fast.

2. Clean you Hair Combs and Brushes every week. Another point you must religiously follow. Sweat, Sebum, Dead cells, Hair, Styling products all accumulate in our hair styling tools each time we use them. Clean them with soap, hot water and a few drops of savlon/dettol. You wouldn't use a dirty towel to wipe you face, would you? Then why a comb?
3. Give your hair rest from heating tools whenever possible. Your hair is a precious fiber just like the fibers present in your woolens, silk and other such materials. You would not iron them everyday. Would you? Treat your hair with the same gentle care and it will be your crowning glory for long.
4. Cut off your split ends. NOW. Split ends are caused when the ends of your hair strands have become so damaged that the outer layer of hair has been destroyed thus exposing the inner part. You can do nothing about them except cut them off.To keep them away moisturize your hair adequately and go for regular trims depending on your hair style. Most products promising magical results are just marketing gimmicks. They will only solve your problem temporarily while the split ends crawl upwards destroying the entire hair fiber. So choose how you will spend you money wisely - on a hair cut or a new product?
5. Choose your products depending on hair type. Just like you choose make up based on your skin type. Your hair too needs products which are suited for it. What works for one hair type may not work for others. But always remember hair is dead fiber. So you do not need a hundred products to care for it. Focus on keeping it clean mainly.
6. Use the best quality hair colour you can afford. But do not use cheaper alternatives at the cost of your health. Pricier at times also doesn't mean better. Use natural alternatives whenever possible. Simple green henna powder is very good for hair both in terms of colour as well as health. And do a patch test always.
7.Its normal to lose upto 120 hair strands every day. Yes. Its a fact. So stop stressing about it. And as long as you are in Good health, your Hair WILL grow back. Also do not twist or pull certain sections of your hair unconsciously. We all do it some time or the other. But its a bad habit. Get rid of it. But if you are developing bald patches on your head, see a doctor asap.
8. Healthy Diet = Healthy Hair . Your hair and nails actually reflect the state of your internal health. These are areas of constant cell division hence any change here means that your health is being affected in some way. This is the reason why girls who go on drastic diets, start losing hair at an alarming rate. So include lots of protein in your diet whether you are a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian. Take plenty of fruits especially citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, amla etc. to keep your hair in good health.
9. Do not style you hair into tight pony tails, buns and updos frequently. Over a long time this can also lead to hair patchy hair loss. Go for an easy to maintain hair style which does not pull or tug your hair too much. Same for kids. Do not force your daughters hair into tight ponytails for school every day. You are setting the background for future hair loss.
10.Get a complete Health Check Up done if you are suffering from excessive hair related problems. There are many conditions which can lead to hair fall like Anemia, Thyroid problems, Auto - Immune diseases, Scalp infections and even some medicines you might be taking. Many of them are treatable and the sooner you get treated, the sooner your hair will start growing back.
So these are a few basic tips to keep in mind for healthy hair. Apart from that use a mild cleanser as frequently as you feel, which will depend on how dirty you scalp/hair feels. Use a conditioner every time you wash your hair. Try and use silicone free shampoos and conditioner. Silicone gets deposited in hair which can make it dry and dull looking. Exercise for 30 minutes minimum everyday. Massage your scalp to increase the blood flow and relieve stress. Do not comb/brush hair when it is wet. Limit use of blow dryer. Do not over comb or over brush your hair, you might injure your scalp. And stay stress free and happy always. It will reflect in the way your hair looks and feels.

In my upcoming posts I will be reviewing some hair products both medicated as well as cosmetic . Do keep a look out for them. And if you have any specific product in mind you would like to see reviewed here, then just leave me a comment. So till next time -

DeleteDear Sam,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the wonderful post.
It was a pretty fast action and I totally appreciate that.
Whoa, I never knew hair was dead fibre... You bring such amazing facts and tips to our knowledge. I now see why I'm having so much hair fall. The culprit are dandruff and mainly keeping my hair twisted into a bun almost throughout summers. However, I do not brush my hair much. How many times should I ideally brush my hair per day? Also, does oiling hair and scalp increase dandruff? Please review some good shampoos I can use to get rid of dandruff.
I'm glad you found the post useful dear :)
Deleteya hair is totally dead fibre, just like nails. And dandruff causes hair fall like no other. I will post a product specifically for dandruff soon, keep a lookout. And I would suggest you do not oil your hair till you get rid of your dandruff completely. There is no specification regarding no. of times that one should brush their hair, just do it while styling in the morn and when you get back home.Excess combing/brushing can actually do more harm than good.
Take care :)
hi doctor..
ReplyDeletei face severe hair thinning problem majorly affecting my frontal portion of the head.. consulted umpteen no of docs but no benefit at all.. recently i came to know abt SLS and SLES free shampoos so have started using them. i oil my hair once a week and shampoo them twice a week.
can you suggest something else. i am from mumbai...
I can understand your concern dear. Have you visited a specialist dermatologist? In mumbai there are many experienced dermats, I suggest you you go to anyone as soon as possible. They will examine you personally and you may also need to undergo a few tests without which the reason for your severe hair fall cannot be found out.
Deletealso check if you are suffering from dandruff, and do make sure to have nutritious food.
Take care.
i have done that.. tried many dermatologist.. may be i am not yet in able hands... can you suggest someone... i know i am being silly.. but just in case, if u know...
DeleteNot silly at all dear, I know how losing hair can feel to a girl..have you tried Kaya clinics? if not do visit them once.. also has any doctor prescribed minoxidil( eg mintop, aminexil brand name etc.) to you..if not then ask your doctor about it. But remember growing back hair takes a lot of patience and a long time..Hope this helps..
Deletetake care
thanks a lot doctor... :)
Deletelovely article! can anything be done about postpartum hair loss?
ReplyDeleteAyesha post partum hair loss is a very common condition. Do not worry about it too much.. hair fall will gradually become less as your baby grows older.. eat nutritious food and continue with usual hair care, your hair will gradually grow back.
Deletehmm bt its sooooo disturbing :(

Thanks Sonshu :) reading such lovely comments just makes my day :)
Deletevery informative
ReplyDeleteI have kind of on and off dandruff since quite a good time now..and never got it treated..will go to see a dermat today itself
looking forward to your next post !!
and specifically would like you to throw some light on hair oils and stress related hair fall
ReplyDelete:)
Thanks for your lovely comment Shaili :)
Deleteabout hair oil - if you have dandruff it is better to avoid hair oil till you get rid of it completely, as the fungus that causes dandruff literally eats the oil produced by your scalp and grows. Once you have you dandruff under control, you can go for regular oil massages, but remember to wash it off with shampoo.
About stress - this is the no.1 cause of most of our problems.. We cannot just vanish away the stress from our lives these days. For hairfall I would suggest that you first treat any underlying cause like dandruff and after that go for regular head massages for relaxation, keep your hair clean at all times, use specific products that suit your hair, minimize the use of heating appliances, get an easy to maintain hair style and take nutritious food. And keep a positive outlook towards life at all times. Your hair will glow with health :)
hope this helps. Take care :)

believe me dear some people actually count the no. oh hair they lose :)
DeleteThanks for the comment :)
I have heard this fungus causing dandruff is found in otherwise healthy scalps too..so if I am washing my hair almost thrice in a week and not going outdoors much then what may be the cause of this dandruff?
ReplyDeleteyes Shaili its true, that fungus is commonly found in normal scalp too, why some people get dandruff more commonly is same as why some people get more acne compared to others, we all are different from others in terms of our skin and hair. In case you are suffering from dandruff constantly I would suggest you use a medicated shampoo like Arcolane, Nizoral etc. every alternate day till you are dandruff free and then use the shampoo once a week as a part of your normal hair care routine. Also in case you are suffering from excessive scaling and flaking on your scalp, you should see a dermat to rule out any other skin disease which is often confused with dandruff like psoriasis.
DeleteHope this helps :) take care
